Summary

In the ninth addition to the New York Times bestselling Spy School series, Ben Ripley faces his nemesis, Murray Hill, on the high seas。

Thanks to the evidence Ben uncovered in his investigation of the Croatoan, the CIA has tracked his nemesis, Murray Hill, to Central America, where they believe he is boarding the world’s biggest cruise ship, The Emperor of the Seas, on its maiden voyage around the world。

His mission: Pose as part of a family, with Alexander and Catherine Hale as his parents, Erica as his sister, and his best friend Mike as his brother, to find out what Murray is plotting。

At first, it sounds exciting to have a mission on the most glamorous ocean liner on earth, but as usual, nothing goes according to plan。 There is action, danger, and plenty of surprises as Ben and his team quickly find themselves in hot water。

I am a faithful reader of the spy school series and this book really proves how great of a writer Stuart Gibbs really is。 This series never gets old and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time while reading this book。 Definitely recommend。

I love this whole series even though it is completely unrealistic because it is hilarious。 Something that really stood out was the quote used。 on Page 15 "And Benjamin, your instructors still won't let you carry a firearm in fear that you will shoot yourself。" (Gibbs 15)This stood out to me because it is funny and it shows how bad Benjamin is with a gun。 I love this whole series even though it is completely unrealistic because it is hilarious。 Something that really stood out was the quote used。 on Page 15 "And Benjamin, your instructors still won't let you carry a firearm in fear that you will shoot yourself。" (Gibbs 15)This stood out to me because it is funny and it shows how bad Benjamin is with a gun。 。。。more

Literally one of the best in the series (though there are some REALLY good ones) I loved the constant danger and the ending was what I have been rooting for since day one

Book 9 was very similar to the last 6-7 Spy School adventures but seemed to save most of the action to the end。 The rest of the story was pretty slow-paced。 Still a good read, however。

Always gotta love a Ben Ripley Spy School novel -- this one was no different。 Well-written, easy to read。 I read it this morning at breakfast and afterwards on the couch。。。 Took no more than an hour and a half and was quite enjoyable。 I love this series and its plotlines。 They're predictable and corny in some ways, but always so, so good。 Recommend for sure Always gotta love a Ben Ripley Spy School novel -- this one was no different。 Well-written, easy to read。 I read it this morning at breakfast and afterwards on the couch。。。 Took no more than an hour and a half and was quite enjoyable。 I love this series and its plotlines。 They're predictable and corny in some ways, but always so, so good。 Recommend for sure 。。。more

Ben and Erica are on another mission to apprehend Murray, this time from his evil scheme to blow up the Panama Canal (a plot eerily familiar after the March 2021 Ever Given blocked the Suez Canal) using a cruise ship with a nuclear engine。This time, Ben has no idea his only role is bait to draw Murray and his Hulk of a henchman, Dane Brammage, out。 Ben goes undercover with Erica, her parents, Alexander (spy-underwhelming) and Catherine Hale (MI6 spy-extraordinaire), and best friend Mike。 They're Ben and Erica are on another mission to apprehend Murray, this time from his evil scheme to blow up the Panama Canal (a plot eerily familiar after the March 2021 Ever Given blocked the Suez Canal) using a cruise ship with a nuclear engine。This time, Ben has no idea his only role is bait to draw Murray and his Hulk of a henchman, Dane Brammage, out。 Ben goes undercover with Erica, her parents, Alexander (spy-underwhelming) and Catherine Hale (MI6 spy-extraordinaire), and best friend Mike。 They're supposed to be one big happy, vacationing, Aloha-shirt-wearing family on a cruise leaving from Nicaragua。They encounter Dane's cousin, a Hulk-look-alike who's a bodyguard for the wife and daughter of the bad guy Ben put behind bars in the last book, and now it looks like they're up to something no good on the cruise ship, but Ben and company have no idea what。They're just stupefied that Dane has a cousin。 And they start to relax。Bad move。Ben's been spotted and they're tricked by Murray almost right after they leave port。 Dane — yes, he's still alive (he's beginning to remind me of Alvin the Treacherous) — throws Ben overboard and Mike thinks fast and launches a lifeboat to save Ben。 Which he does, with amazing speed and accuracy in the big wide ocean。 The boys make it to land, end up the "guests" of a local drug lord who flies them to the next port so they can get back on the big boat and figure out what Murray has up his sleeve…besides killing Ben。 That's a given。And they have to deal with an overly chipper teen events coordinator on the cruise!I won't spoil how it ends, or the big plot twist。 Just know, Gibbs does a great job skewering the cruise industry, what it does to local ports and the horrific working conditions of many cruise employees / staff, with his descriptions and the plot。 I've never taken a cruise, so I enjoyed reading all the descriptions of cruise-doings and cruise-goers。 They were the source of multiple laugh-out-loud bursts as I read。 Enjoy!Looking for more book suggestions for your 7th/8th grade classroom and students? 4。5- This had a different feel to it than the most recent in the series, and I liked it! Definitely not stale! The cruise ship was an interesting setting。 The Hale family (minus Grandpa and Trixie) plus Ben and Mike make a fun team。 Some other series favorites make an appearance too。 The peril Ben finds himself in! There's one scene that really ramped it up。 I couldn't think of how he'd get out of it! Can't wait for the next book! 4。5- This had a different feel to it than the most recent in the series, and I liked it! Definitely not stale! This book was probably the best one in the series because the evil plot and characters have such a cool adventure! ON A CRUISE!!! But the last words… “Because Erica Hale kissed me。” I guess that’s how you could end a spy book, but that was not one of my favorite ways to do the job。

My son loved this one but I am getting a little tired of the same story line, same struggles, same silly mistakes, same outcomes, etc。。。 the good thing is that the ending this time does differ slightly from the previous books。 I love Stuart Gibbs and our boys will read anything he writes, so we will keep reading。

Great

As usual, lots of fun。 Ben and Mike and Erica, natch, along with her parents, are to pose as a family on a cruise boat to track down Murray。 They aren’t sure what evil deed he has going so they need to find that out too。 They meet Jessica with her Mom this time。 Are they involved? Be sure to read the final email setting up the next episode of Spy School! Love this ridiculous series! Argh, next book hasn’t been published yet!

Naomi

This is definitely the best book out of all of them。 The action level was higher, the plot development better, and the character interactions were more intricate。 The ending was amazing and I really enjoyed reading it。 In each book Ben is getter better at being a spy and you can really tell in this one how he has developed throughout the series。 This was overall an amazing book。

Randy Tramp

Love the characters and the adventure。

Colleen Earle

This wasn’t my favourite book in the spy school series but it did scratch an itch I had for a ridiculous spy thriller These characters are so great and I am very invested in their continued growthI feel like the conclusion for this series is coming soon which makes me sad, but I can also say with some certainty that it will be a very exciting finale

Zachary Pederson

This was a fun, great book with lots of action, humor, (and some romance too)! Mr。 Gibbs, thank you for making this a engaging page-turner for the epic 9th novel of Spy School!

Mia

It was a good book。 I got it as a graduation present and while I did like the action and the moments between Ben and Erica, It didn’t feel as funny as the other books。 But I still love the series and can’t wait for the next one。

It had some pacing issues, Erica and Catherine acted really out of character in the entire middle of the book, and the ending was anticlimactic and quite gross。 Murray, Mike, and Jessica were funny though。

So good! This book was a very light and quick read for me, but a very good book。

Our latest read of Spy School! They are on their latest adventure to save a cruise ship being used as a nuclear bomb。 Lots of seasickness and adventures within!
